Job description

The Office of Academic Advising is seeking applicants for our peer mentoring program. Academic Advising works with students in three different capacities: we assist with the first year and transfer student transition, we offer pre-major and pre-professional advising, and we manage academic standing status and exception petitions. As a peer mentor, you would partner with an Undergraduate Advising Director to equip first-year undergraduates with the knowledge and skills to successfully navigate their academic journeys. You will draw from training and your own experiences to offer unique insights to the student experience with the common goal of facilitating a smooth transition for new Stanford students.

In this role, you will:

  • Hold drop-in hours and/or individual appointments in frosh dorms (evenings, weekends) and in Sweet Hall (weekdays) where you will provide information and guidance on topics such as General Education Requirements, enrollment, important dates and deadlines, connecting with campus resources etc.
  • Staff the Academic Advising front desk to assess student needs and direct them to the appropriate resource 
  • Collaborate with an Undergraduate Advising Director to whom you refer students when appropriate
  • Participate in a weekly check in meeting with supervisors
  • Assist incoming students with learning how to navigate campus life during NSO
  • Promote your services through flyers and other advertisements
  • Assist with academic advising programming, such as Majors Night and Winter Warmup, as needed
  • Maintain Academic Advising’s social media sites

To be eligible for this role, you should: 

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above for the past three quarters (Applicants who struggled as a frosh but have since learned how to excel at Stanford will be considered excellent candidates, in addition to those who have been successful every quarter)
  • Enroll in the spring training course Tuesday 1:30-2:50 pm (no exceptions) 
  • Be able to return to Stanford by the Sunday before NSO and complete a full day of training on Monday of NSO
  • Be present for the entire NSO as your mentoring duties will begin that week
  • Be a current sophomore or Junior (Junior or senior AY 27-28) enrolled in classes at Stanford main campus in all three quarters (If you plan to study away AY27-28, you are not eligible)
  • Remain in good academic standing for the duration of your appointment 
  • Complete any incomplete grades by September 2027
  • Be eligible to receive an hourly wage and not work another job (on or off campus) that together with this one total over 15 hours a week
  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident, or in a visa status appropriate to receive payment from a United States source (You are responsible for understanding how your visa status in the United States impacts your ability to work in the United States, and any restrictions to which you may be subject. Bechtel International Center can assist you if you have questions about citizenship, residency, or visa status.)
  • To determine an applicant’s qualifications, standing at the University, and eligibility to participate in the program, the following offices may be consulted:

Compensation

  • You will earn units (CR/NC) for the Spring training course
  • Hourly wages will begin on the Monday of NSO at $19-20/hour depending on experience
  • The position will be for a minimum of 4 hours of work per week during the Academic Year, except for NSO week which will be significantly more (You are not expected to work during winter or spring break)
