Joint Advising & Coaching Support Program (JACS)

Main content start

The Joint Advising & Coaching Support Program (JACS) is a specialized academic support initiative established by the office of Academic Advising and the Center for Teaching and Learning. As a JACS student, you will work in partnership with a dedicated Academic Coach and your Undergraduate Advising Director to make progress towards your academic goals.

Why join JACS?

By joining JACS, you will receive personalized support and guidance throughout the academic quarter to help you meet your academic goals. Together, your JACS Academic Coach and your UAD can help you:

  • develop effective academic skills and habits
  • improve your ability to meet deadlines
  • increase your academic confidence
  • reduce stress caused by feeling overwhelmed
  • navigate requirements and make decisions about your academic plans
  • think through broader obstacles you’re facing and connect you with resources
Words from a former JACS student: "As a result of this program, I have grown a newfound confidence in myself to succeed in my academics at Stanford. I constantly had help and support from very nice professionals. I am now very confident in tackling the rest of my quarters while at Stanford!"

What does JACS involve?

The JACS program involves tailored support from an Academic Coach and your UAD through recurring 1:1 sessions.  Your Academic Coach can help you discover best practices for learning and thriving in your classes – whether that be a better way to take notes in lecture, study for exams, tackle papers and assignments, or manage your time effectively without procrastinating. Your UAD can help you think through any difficulties you may currently be facing, what resources you may want to connect with, whether you want to make any changes to your academic plans, how to navigate your requirements, and how to manage and adjust your course load as the quarter progresses.

If you move forward with the JACS program, your Academic Coach and your UAD will make sure that you are able to schedule regular recurring appointments with each of them consistently throughout the quarter.  To learn more about what you can expect in your individual JACS meetings, we invite you to watch the following 5-minute JACS informational video.

Who is JACS for?

Students who have been placed on an academic probation or deferred suspension status, as well as students who are returning from a completed academic suspension, are automatically invited to JACS. Keep an eye on your inbox for our outreach email!

Can I get JACS support if I'm not a member of these groups?

JACS participation is currently limited to students on academic probation, deferred suspension, or returning from a completed academic suspension.  But any student can receive similar support services by signing up for regular recurring appointments with their assigned Undergraduate Advising Director as well as an Academic Coach.
